Tuesday


  1. Character Day tomorrow: Please come dressed as your favourite character from a book. The outfit must follow the school dress code - e.g. No masks, weapons (fake or otherwise), etc.
  2. Grade 6 Farewell - Afternoon Assembly begins at 1 p.m. Cake and beverages available for 6s and their families afterward. Parents/guardians may sign their children out if the assembly ends before 2:30. Evening event put on and organized by the Farewell Parent Committee and Parent Council will begin at 6 that evening in the gym.
  3. Friday, June 24th:
  • End of Year Assembly - 9:30 a.m. Parents and members of the general school community are welcome.
  • Half-day 
  • Report Cards go home

A Message from Ms. Binks and Mr. Sadowsky - Sports Day

On Friday we will be having our Sports Day after lunch. Please make sure that you are wearing appropriate clothing and shoes to be outside all afternoon. Students are encouraged to bring water bottles and hats. If you choose to wear sunscreen please apply it at home in the morning. Some of the stations for Sports Day will include water. Students can choose whether they participate in these stations. They may bring a change of dry clothes for afterwards, otherwise they may come home wet. We are asking that everyone wears Sporty Spunky Socks on Friday.

However, to participate, students are asked to make a donation (of any amount) to help those affected by the fire. There are two deadlines for the donations: May 31st - any money collected up until this point will be matched by the Red Cross. June 3rd - the school's deadline, will be donated to the Red Cross (but the organization will not match this amount). 
  2. Fun lunch due Wednesday, June 1st.

General:
  1. Human Sexuality Forms overdue!  Human Sexuality began today for the Grade 5s and will begin tomorrow for the Grade 6s.  It will run for approximately 2 weeks.  Parents are encouraged to follow-up with their children at home.
  2. Short week this week. 
  • Early dismissal Thursday, May 19th. 
  • PD Day Friday, May 20th. 
  • No school the following Monday, May 23rd (Victoria Day).
Science:

  1. Local and Provincial Government title pages were handed back today.
  2. Wampum Projects were returned today. General feedback is below:
  • Spelling and grammar must be attended to. Many students did not read their assignments out loud. If they had, they would have noticed that many of their sentences did not make grammatical sense.
  • Students' symbol choices were logical and made sense with their chosen event. 
  • Justification continues to be a work in progress, but students are starting to provide a more thorough response to "So, what?" Justifications needed to discuss FREJ (the principles of democracy) and how the chosen event fulfills (or doesn't fulfill) the criteria the class created for what makes an event in history, "important."
  • Students' summaries were largely incomplete. Many did not even say what specifically, their event was about. For example: 
    • The Civil Rights Movement and Suffrage Movements were about bringing equality for groups who were being mistreated (i.e. African-Americans and women, respectively). 
    • The Magna Carta was the first time that someone in power (King John) had their powers limited and were no longer seen as above the law.
    • Ancient Athenian democracy gave "power to the people" - it is considered by the western world as the "birthplace of democracy."
    • The Iroquois Confederacy was a form of democracy where women were allowed to voice their opinions and hold leadership positions in a democratic society.
Language Arts

  1. Infomercial presentations began today and the first 5 groups did a very good job and set a high standard for all other groups. We will continue tomorrow.

  1. Sky Science title page will be due next Monday.  Students have received approximately 2 hours and were reminded just before home time to bring their title pages home. If students have forgotten their sheets at home, find a blank piece of paper and complete the title page that way.

    Just a reminder on Wednesday May 25th is Beddington Heights' Spring concert. The classes performing on this day are Kindergarten AM, all Grade 1 classes, Mrs. Grunert, Ms. Zimmerman, Ms. Gaspar, Mrs. Brink, and Mrs. Anderson. Doors will open at 6:00pm and the concert will begin at 6:30pm. Students will be going to their classrooms while guests will go to the gym. Once the concert is done, students will be picked up at their classrooms. We would appreciate it if you stayed for the whole concert. Thank you.

    Thursday Performances:

    Just a reminder on Thursday May 26th is Beddington Heights' Spring concert. Language Arts P.A.T. (Part A) tomorrow

Here are some tips for success:

  • sleep early tonight
  • wake up a little earlier than usual so you're not rushed
  • eat a good breakfast (healthy food items)
  • come to school at 7:45 am (no earlier) for some play/wake-up time in the gym.  Ms. Cheng and Ms. Maher will pick you up at the front door.

Message from Higher Up :)

The Calgary Board of Education is committed to providing students and staff with a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environment that respects diversity and fosters a sense of belonging. With this in mind, the CBE is creating a system-wide Student Code of Conduct (Administrative Regulation 6005) with input from students, parents and CBE employees. This new code of conduct will apply to all CBE schools, and beginning in the 2016/17 school year, individual schools will no longer have their own codes of conduct.   1. Part A ELA exam is next THURSDAY, MAY 12, 2016. The Grade 6s did a fantastic job this morning. Please ask your child how they felt going through the process and brainstorm strategies they can employ to help with nerves, time management, etc. A big thank you to the Grade 5s for staying quiet so that our 6s could concentrate on their practice.
  2. Reading Give-it-A-Shot is now over.
  3. Popcorn Sales upcoming: Mavericks will be selling popcorn again to finish their fund raising commitment to Free The Children starting Monday May 9 at lunch recess outside (weather-permitting)  We will sell every Monday until we sell out.  Popcorn is $2.00 a bag.
  4.  School Council is in great need of volunteer drivers and collectors to help with this Saturday’s bottle drive.   Proceeds will go to fund the Grade 6 Farewell evening.  If you are able to volunteer,  please contact Meghan Cooper (403) 613-1516 or meghanbuchanan@shaw.ca.    If you are unable to volunteer but have bottles/cans to contribute, you are welcome to drop them at the school parking lot on Saturday, May 7 between 9 am & 3 pm, or leave a marked bag on your doorstep for pickup.  Thank you!”

Volunteer Tea Invitation

This year, volunteer tea invitations will be going out via email for Rooms 14 and 15.

Parents/Guardians who have volunteered this year for field trips and other school functions will receive theirs via email by tomorrow.
