  1. Due Mrs. Tam's and Ms. Cheng's due old age, we forgot about Twin Day...even though we posted it on the blog yesterday.  THEREFORE, Twin Day will happen TOMORROW...hopefully.
  2. Caroling at 12:30 pm tomorrow.  Parents are welcome to join us.
  3. If your child ordered a school t-shirt/hoodie, they have been sent home today.
  4. If you received a form last week from Ms. Cheng and Mrs. Tam because you were unable to attend Parent-Teacher Conferences, please return the form before winter break begins.

Tip-Toe Tuesday

General:
  1. Our art activity takes place tomorrow. Six students have volunteered to pre-wash the mugs. Ms. Cheng will meet the group at the front doors at 7:40 tomorrow morning. We still have extra mugs and students who have not brought mugs in. 
  2. Thank you to our parent volunteers and those who offered to volunteer beforehand. 
  3. Round Two of Twin Day will be TOMORROW.

Finally Friday! :)

General:
  1. Many students still need to bring in white mugs - 7 students per class.  We cannot begin the winter activity until everybody has a mug. If you can not bring one, please let your teacher know.
  2. Room 14/15 will go to the "Legend Has It" play on Tuesday. EVERYONE MUST BRING A LUNCH - no food will be available for purchase at the theatre.
  3. Parents/Guardians who were unable to attend conferences last week, we have sent home a letter and a copy of your student's learning plan. Please read the letter and sign the learning plan. Return as soon as possible.

Thundering Thursday

General:

  2. Winter Concert for Grade 5 and 6 students is TONIGHT at 6:00 pm.; be here by 5:30 and not sooner. Doors will be closed before then.

  1. A few students still owe us spelling assignments. Test TOMORROW.
Social:
  1. Research for Ancient Athen's Democracy was due today, but with concert rehearsal, Ms. Cheng could not check on the notes. A homework check of the RESEARCH NOTES will be done on Monday. Students have already been given a few periods for a handful of research questions.  Questions to ask your child to check for understanding:
    • How were the residents organized in Ancient Athens?
    • How might someone gain citizenship?
    • What were the roles and responsibilities for each group?
    • What type of democracy did Ancient Athen's have?  What does that mean?

    General:
    1. Legend Has It forms and fees are now overdue. There are still six students in Rooms 14 and 15 who have yet to return their forms and fees.
    2. Thank you to all students and families for bringing in bottles for our fundraiser for the Chinery family.
    3. As per the notice sent out last week, Room 14 and 15's Parent-Teacher conferences will ALL take place on Friday, December 4th from 10:30 to 6:30.
    4. A green form has been sent home regarding our winter concert/art walk. Please sign and RSVP as soon as you can.
    Language Arts:


    1. Narrative Story is due Monday, November 23rd. Many have handed in their stories already.
    • The package needs to include: Good copy of the story, beginning checklist, self and peer evaluation, story writing reflection, and rubric.
    Math:
    1. Please sign the green sheet for Number Sense Quiz #2 and return ASAP.
    Outdoor School

    1. Come to school at your normal time. Go through the front doors and place your bags along the sides of the gym wall. Come dressed and prepared for that day's weather. We will head up to our class together at about 8:10. Students will read quietly until it is time to board the bus.
    • Remember: If you can't carry your own bag, you have packed too much. 
    • For Thursday, December 3rd: Please ensure that you have a ride home or someone can come pick you up. Students will need to be signed out by a parent/guardian/other adult. Students who will not have someone pick them up will have to stay until 2:30, at which time they may walk home with their bags. They can leave their bags in the gym IF THEIR PARENTS/GUARDIANS ARE ATTENDING PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES THE NEXT DAY.

Due to the hit and run incident on Friday, the Grade 5/6 classrooms decided to start a bottle drive to raise funds to buy items to make a personalized gift basket for each of the students in our class. We have begun collecting the recyclable items. Please rinse them out prior to bringing them to school.  Students are welcome to bring monetary donations if they are unable to bring something for the bottle drive.
    Language Arts:
    1. Students have begun to type up their good copies at school.
    • Students now have the narrative story rubric and we went over how to use it to ensure that stories submitted are the students' best possible work.
    • Story due date: November 30th, 2015
    Math:
    1. Please sign the green sheet for Number Sense Quiz #2 and return ASAP.
    Social:
    1. Ancient Athens title page is now overdue. Those who have not finished their title pages are reminded to use the title page evaluation to guide the completion of their work. 12 students still owe Ms. Cheng title pages. They have said that they will hand it in tomorrow morning.

Due to the hit and run incident on Friday, the Grade 5/6 classrooms decided to start a bottle drive to raise funds to buy items to make a personalized gift basket for each of the students in our class. We have begun collecting the recyclable items. Please rinse them out prior to bringing them to school.  Students are welcome to bring monetary donations if they are unable to bring something for the bottle drive.
    • Thank you to all who have been able to contribute monetarily, with recyclables, and your thoughts/well wishes for the family affected.
    • We had a follow-up conversation with each of our classes separately today after lunch. Parents/guardians, please let us know if you believe your child will require more support as they deal with making sense of the incident. The students have done an amazing job demonstrating compassion, empathy, and support for their classmates. 
    Language Arts:
    1. Students have begun to type up their good copies at school.
    • Tomorrow, we will discuss the narrative story rubric and how to use it to ensure that stories submitted are the students' best possible work.
    • The rubric has not yet been handed out, but copies have been put up in the class for students to refer to. However, many have yet to look the rubric over as they have only just begun their good copies.

    1. We have been working on story writing for the past week.  For today, students had to have finished:
      • Story Map #1
      • Story Beginning #1
      • Story Map #2
      • Story Beginning #2
      • Self-Evaluation for story beginning #1 and #2
    2. Students were given time to write Rising Action Event #1 today. Tomorrow, time will be given for writing Rising Action Events #2 and #3.
    Social:
    1. Students will be given 20 minutes on Wednesday to work on their Ancient Athens title page.  Any unfinished work will be assigned for homework.
    • If students think they will not have time to finish their title page on Wednesday night, we strongly encourage them to finish it tonight (or finish most of it tonight) for homework. Some students have already completed their title pages and have handed them in.

    Calgary Firefighters Toy Association - Mrs. Hayes

    Below is a repeat of a post made last week re: The Calgary Firefights Toy Association's event that supports families in need during the holiday season. 

    Dear Families:

    The Calgary Firefighters Toy Association hosts an annual Christmas party for families who may require some form of assistance during the festive season. If you feel you may need some support this holiday season and would like your children to be considered to attend the party on December 20th at the Stampede Corral, please pick up a form at the office and return to Karon Hayes, Assistant Principal. 

    Please note this is only for children 12 years of age or younger. There are a maximum number of children that can be accepted and applicants are chosen on a first come, first serve basis. If you have any questions, please contact Karon at (403) 777-6610. 

    There is a deadline for applications, so please contact Mrs. Hayes no later than Wednesday, November 18, 2015.

    ECOSchool Packing List


    Merely Monday

    General:

Dave Harty from the Calgary Police Services, give all Grade 5/6s classes a presentation called About Face.  Students learned about surrounding ourselves with people that inspire them to be better, being aware of drug abuse issues that many teens face today (e.g. Fetanyl), appropriate social media use and the importance of demonstrating kindness to everyone.  Please have a discussion with your child about what they heard today.

    Language Arts:
    1. We have been working on story writing for the past week.  Students should have the following completed:

    Phenomenal Friday

    General
    1. We are still missing a handful of behavioural contracts and permission forms for outdoor school. Please bring them in ASAP. 
    2. "Legend Has It" form and money due November 27th. Cost: $5. Thank you to all who offered to volunteer for our trip. We now have our two volunteers.
    3. Fun Lunch: Orders due November 18th.
    4. All of next week is anti-bullying awareness week. Next Friday will be a spirit day - dress in blue to show you're against bullying. 
    Language Arts
    1. Story #2 was mapped out today. Some students took the initiative and began their second story beginning. The map for Story #2 must be done for Monday.
    Social Studies
    1. The title page assignment was assigned today. Students need to use the checklist on the back of the handout to ensure that the title page is done completely.  
    • Words brainstormed by the class: lottery, social structure, constitution, Bouleterion, Boule, democracy, minority, majority, citizen, metic, tyrant, slaves, defendant, magistrate, justice, plaintiff, values, power Greece, dowry, oral history, orator, ostracize, justice, agora, philosopher, rights, and responsibilities. 
    • Students were asked to spend the weekend thinking about what illustrations they can use the represent the 10 vocal words they chose; they may need parent/guardian support for this as some of the key terms are abstract
    • 15 minutes will be given in class next day to continue work on the title pages. A due date will be announced afterwards.
