Worldly Wednesday

General

1. A sheet of blue paper was sent home yesterday with students and outlines information about the Outdoor School orientation session that will take place on October 13th, 2015 between 6 and 7 p.m. All parents are asked to attend this important session.

2. Swimming takes place tomorrow. Please make sure to bring swim gear (e.g. a swim suit, towel, flip flops, goggles (optional), and loose fitting clothing to wear after swimming so that it is easier to change back into.)

3. Terry Fox Run

Both Room 14 and 15 ran a combined 208.5 km. Well done, Grades 5 and 6!

If anyone would still like to bring toonies for Terry, you have until Friday.

Terry Fox Tuesday

General:

2. Swim forms are overdue; please return the permission and swim ability forms ASAP. The payment can be made later. October 1st is the first day Room 14/15 will go swimming.

Our Terry Fox Run is coming up on Wednesday September 30th at 12:45. 

Please consider donating a Toonie for Terry to support the Terry Fox Foundation. 

You can send donations in by Wednesday Sept. 30th, or if it is more convenient for you, donations can be made online at http://www.terryfox.org/SchoolRun/. Click “Give to a STUDENT” and enter Beddington Heights.

If students are able to, they are encouraged to wear pink, orange, or a Beddington Heights t-shirt for tomorrow's run. 

Science:
  1. Students received roughly three periods of Science to work on researching for their organism. Each student has their own specific organism to research. 
  • What is it? (Description of its appearance, carnivore/herbivore/omnivore, etc.?)
  • Where in the world can you find it? (e.g. North America, South America, etc.)
  • Habitat (e.g. Wetlands, forest, etc.)
  • Diet
  • Predator/prey (If the organism is a tree, what animals feeds off of it?)
  • Interesting facts
Social Studies
  1. The Latitude and Longitude Practice sheet is due tomorrow.

General:

1. OUTDOOR SCHOOL INFO: Rooms 14 and 15 will be going November 30 - December 3rd. 

  • Please keep an eye out for the date and time of our must-attend orientation session. This session is important for all parents/guardians to attend in order to learn more about the programme and how to pack for outdoor school.

    General:

    2. Open house: Wednesday afternoon/evening (two sessions) and Friday morning (one session). There will be time to have informal conversations with the teacher before and after each session. Please set aside time to see your child's desk and to look at some of the things they've been learning over the past four weeks.
    Language Arts

    1. Maniac MaGee quiz is tomorrow. We reviewed the key story details today (e.g. characters, setting, conflict, and the first few rising action events). The quiz is multiple choice and out of ten.

    Math:
    1. Place values quiz on THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 24th, 2015.

    2. The Meet the Teacher questionnaire and parent letter explaining how the 5/6 teachers will run September interviews were sent home yesterday. Please read over the notice carefully, as our schedule is slightly different from the school's.
    3. Booking for conferences will begin at the end of the week. Please ensure you are familiar with the new sign-up process.
    Language Arts
    1. Silhouettes are due TOMORROW. 
    2. We introduced figurative language today. For those who want to think ahead, what are the following and can you come up with an example for each? Alliteration, assonance, and hyperbole.
    Science
    1. There are a handful of students who have yet to hand in their science title pages. Students will stay in at recess until these are done.

    3. The BBQ put on my parent council is tomorrow. We highly encourage students to bring a snack just in case they receive their BBQ orders after their normal lunch time.
    Language Arts
    1. Silhouettes are due Wednesday, September 16th, 2015. Ms. Cheng is supervising any students who wish to work on their silhouettes during the day at morning recess and lunch recess.
    2. We introduced figurative language today. This will form the basis of our upcoming poetry unit.
    Science
    1. There are still 12 students who have yet to hand in their science title pages. Students will stay in at recess until these are done.

    Freedom Friday!

    Today, we had our Welcome Back Assembly with the whole school!  We had a chance to see the faces of new students and learn the names of all the staff members in the school.  

    General:
    1. Bring newspaper, preferably with text (black and white)
    2. A handful of students still need to bring back their (1) Student Package (2) Digital Citizenship and (3) Grade 5 Vaccination Forms.  If you've misplaced any of these, please let the teachers know.
    3. The Meet the Teacher questionnaire for Grades 5/6 will be sent home early next week. 5/6 will be running an open house and we are putting final touches on a letter that explains the process this year. We appreciate everyone's patience on this matter.
    Science:
    1. Trees and Forest title page due MONDAY!  Due the checklist to ensure you have all necessary components.
    Language Arts:
    1. A few students from Room 15 still owe Mrs. Tam their Personal Anthem.  They have been overdue for a few days now.

    • Students have been working on a personal anthem answering the question "What Do I Stand For?"  Both classes were given three 45-minute periods to write three verses with four lines each (12 lines in total).  Some students used their time wisely in class and will only need to write out the good copy; however, many students used their class time to socialize and will have to complete the rough and good copy at home.  We will continue to have conversations about time management and focus in class.  The good copy of anthem is due tomorrow, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10TH.  Good copies may be typed or written out neatly on blank white paper.  Students who do not finish their homework for tomorrow, will be asked to stay in at recess and/or lunch recess to complete the homework.

    Can you believe the first week is over?!  We've had a great time getting to know everybody in our class!

    1. Forms packages are due September 4th.
    2. Grade 5s received their vaccination forms. Parents/guardians, please read, sign these forms, and return these forms as they are time-sensitive (September 9th).
    3. Students, please bring a quiet reading book as we will not have library book exchange for about another week.
    4. September calendar, along with other informational brochures/flyers were sent home today. Students were given their homework folders. Similar to last year, if students lose these folders, it will cost $1 to replace them. Folders have been labelled with the student's name and classroom number. As we progress through the year and homework increases, these folders will be helpful to keep work safe from spills.

    Tag-Team Tuesday

    General

    We'd like to welcome the parents/guardians and students of Ms. Cheng and Mrs. Tam's Grade 5/6 classes to our learning community.

    Today, we went over many classroom rules and briefly introduced homework expectations.

    We look forward to working alongside every family to ensure success for each student this year.


    1. Students, please bring a quiet reading book with you until we have library time next week.
    2. Homework folders will be sent home with students tomorrow.
    3. Forms package went home today. 
    • For those who did not receive one, you will receive yours tomorrow afternoon. Forms packages are due Friday, September 4th, 2015.
